Letters to Frederick W. Bennett, 1943, 1945-1946.

The collection consists of correspondence from Robert L. Bennett to his parents while serving in the 2nd Army then later the 8th Army in the Pacific Theater from 1943, 1945-1946. Early letters, written from training camps in Ft. Riley (Ks.) and Tennessee and military posts in California, describe the geographic areas, training, and Bennett's duties. In 1945, Bennett's unit was shipped to the Pacific Theater and his letters discuss the Philippines, especially Manila and Leyte, and Japan. The letters include descriptions of the area, the people, camp life, and typhoons. Letters Bennett wrote after Japan's surrender contain information on Japanese prisoners of war, the independence of the Philippines, and his post war duties including processing troops in and out of the area and teaching classes for the army.
